Overcoming the fear of math: it doesn't bite, after all "math is for selected people who will work with it in the future." most of us fear mathematics. we all have that mentality in which we avoid things and situations wherein we are required to deal with numbers and calculations. to us, it seems like the monster under our beds at night or the terror teacher in school. however, if you try to look at math differently and more positively, then you will be able to see a brighter side of it. surprisingly, it is everywhere! during my first few months in college, i have been trying to drive my fear of math away because the past few years were hard without having the knowledge of it. it was my way of stepping out from the 'comfort zone', from the toxic mentality that mathematics is only for those who are smart enough and had the energy to devote their time understanding the concepts. i must say having the subject mathematics in the modern world or ge 4 this semester was fun. yes, i may have several mistakes because i overthink things during exams. and yes, i had learned from them all and will continue to ponder on greater concepts other than basic algebra. however, if i’m patient enough instead of getting insecure about others doing better in math, then my focus will drift apart from my main goal which is to learn. through ge 4, i became better in math. i may not have perfect scores even when i try, but i keep on pushing through. the key is to not settle for less. as a medical technology student and a future lifesaver, i believe that i should not give only 75% of my efforts. as much as possible, anyone should give their all on anything they wish to put their efforts into. that mentality is the same in overcoming my fear of math. if you let fear prevail, then you will miss a lot of opportunities. imagine the things you're good at if you have not given up on trying harder. in my case, the moment i stepped in my ge 4 classroom with the willingness to listen and understand, i got to grasp a lot of information that i did not know was important. first was the scientific explanation on why honeycombs are composed of dense hexagons lying close to each other. second is the argument flow of propositional logic that i did not know was actually important in validation. it is just like analyzing whether the person is telling the truth or not. and the third were the other concepts in decoding and encoding from a given data. i learned to apply it on playing hard guessing games with my friends, and decrypting messages to be able to understand them. all of those aforementioned were all but nonexistent to me until i started learning and devoting my time and effort on them. in fact, i even realized that the flowers that i play my hands with whenever i pass by are part of the pattern concept that is explained in the fibonacci sequence. overcoming math is a win-win situation. i just needed time and full understanding on what lies ahead of it instead of staying on the superficial ideas of mathematics. to me, it is just like the lesson in ge 4 that involves decision making wherein you need to analyze how much effort you need to learn as much.
